KUALA LUMPUR: National cyclists will be rewarded with a one-night stay at the Genting Hotel worth RM1,000 if they win any of the seven stages of the Tour of Langkawi (LTdL), which begins on Monday.

Resorts World Bhd (RWB) executive director Tan Sri Alwi Jantan said the incentive was to encourage the national cyclists to aim for greater heights.

“We believe that our riders are just as capable as the foreign cyclists and can win one of the seven stages,” said Alwi after handing over RWB’s RM1mil sponsorship, in cash and kind, to LTdl chief operating officer Datuk Naim Mohd for the seven-day Tour yesterday.

RWB are also sponsoring the King of Mountain red jersey for the seven-stage Tour.

The 14th edition of the Tour will see the return of the gruelling climb up Genting Highlands after a year’s absence.

Malaysian rider Leo Sea Keong said the one-night stay reward would definitely encourage the national cyclists to give their best in the Tour.

“However, the Genting Highlands stage will be the toughest because of the steep climb and none of us in the national riders are good in hill climbs,” said Sea Keong, who will be competing in the Tour for the fourth time.

“Only the expert mountain climbers will be able to do well.” -- The Star News.
