IN October 1952, over a hundred undergraduates enrolled to study medicine at the King Edward VII Medical College at the University of Malaya in Singapore.

It was a milestone for the university as it was the single largest batch of undergraduates thus far to enrol at the Faculty of Medicine.

Among them were 10 female freshmen (again the biggest number to date) and also for the first time a freshman from Terengganu and Sabah.

After six years of intensive study, about 60 managed to graduate with a M.B.B.S degree in June 1958. At least 20 of them subsequently became specialists in the various medical disciplines - one of them with his wife (a fellow graduate) established the now prestigious Thompson Medical Centre in Singa-pore while another graduate is a world renowned ophthalmologist.

Over the past 50 years, the Class of 1958 became very close and stayed in constant touch. They celebrated their 25th Silver reunion in February 1983 at Sentosa Island, Singapore, their 30th graduation reunion at Awana Golf Resort in December 1988 and they got together again for their 50th graduation reunion early this month (Nov 7- 9).

Eighteen of the graduates met and stayed at the Equatorial Hotel in Cameron Highlands.

Seven came from Singapore, 10 from Malaysia and one from Sydney. There was instant camaraderie within the group and their spouses.

A generous classmate treated everyone to a sumptuous grand dinner complete with candlelight and white roses on Nov 7.

The following day, the 10 classmates from Singapore hosted a scrumptious buffet lunch at the former Merlin Hotel.

When it was time to say “till we meet again”, each graduate was presented with a souvenir mug (with their graduation photo imprinted on it) and a copy of their formal group photographs.

Everyone agreed that this was the best reunion so far. --- The Star Metro
