TAMPIN: Seven proved to be a lucky number for a family here.

The seven put their heads together and came up with seven winning entries for the seventh week of The Star 8 Wonders “Rank and Win” contest.

Retiree Soon Poh Suan, 55, said the winners, who include her husband Lim Eng Kian, 54, son Eu Jern, 20, daughter, Pei Shen, 28, sister, Poh Lean, 49, brother, Seong Khim, 39, and her daughter’s boyfriend Heng Aik Jong, 28, decided they would stand a greater chance of winning if they worked together on the entries.

“We brainstormed and agreed upon a common solution before sending out our entries. We’ve been at it since Week One,” said the former teacher.

“We felt there was no point in splitting up the entries or giving different answers and true enough our decision has paid off.”

Arriving at a common solution was not exactly easy as Poh Lean lives in Penang, Seong Khim in Selangor, Aik Jong in Seremban and Eu Jern is studying in Kuala Lumpur.

The family correctly ranked the most popular local holiday destinations which was the subject of week seven’s edition of the contest.

The top holiday spot for week seven was Genting Highlands followed by Penang, Pulau Redang, Cameron Highlands, Malacca, Langkawi, Pulau Tioman and Pulau Pangkor.

A total of 24,855 entries were received for week seven.

“Our phone bills must have skyrocketed as we communicated via telephone until all of us agreed on one common ranking,’’ said Aik Jong.

Poh Suan said she felt bad for her husband, a teacher at SJK (C) Pay Chee near here, who was not able to share the joy as he was attending a course in Johor Baru.

“He was the mastermind behind it and would have loved to be here today, if not for work. We waited anxiously week after week to see if we were the winners and just the other day I was teasing him about it,” she said.

“So, when he called me to say we had won, I thought he was joking.”

When contacted via telephone, Eng Kian said he was encouraged to participate after his wife’s constant prodding.

“We have sent in entries for various newspaper contests but this is the first time we have won so I’m glad our hard work has paid off,” he said.

He added that his family have been loyal readers of The Star for more than 25 years.

This family of winners, who took home 182,000 BonusLink points each, plan to redeem their collective winnings for a holiday together.

“I think a family that works and plays together, sticks together. What better way to enjoy our win than to go on a trip together?” said Seong Khim, a sales manager.

Sales support officer Pei Shen and boyfriend Aik Jong plan to redeem some points for a Christmas shopping spree as well.

The contest was organised by The Star in collaboration with Giant, LG Electronics Malaysia and BonusLink in celebration of the auspicious date 08.08.08. --- The Star.
