On the 45th anniversary of Jim Thompson's disappearance in Cameron Highlands, Star2 takes readers back to that fateful day when the whole town was abuzz with news of a missing mat salleh.

WE were on the hunt for Jim Thompson. No, not Jim Thompson the Thai Silk King, whose disappearance 45 years ago in the Cameron Highlands jungle remains one of the most enduring mysteries in the region.

The man we were looking for was taxi driver Ng Kiew Chay, whom the locals of Cameron Highlands refer to as "Jim Thompson".

You see, each time we mentioned we wanted to talk about the day Thompson (the actual one, not the taxi driver) disappeared, everyone kept telling us the same thing – "Look for that taxi guy Thompson!"

Mossy Forest Boardwalk to Gunung Brinchang being repaired and should be ready in a months time. Great to give this a go for some outdoor adventure hiking. And yes, people have lost their way resulting in a search and rescue so the boardwalk serves as guide to stick to the path and avoid getting lost. Now that it is under repair they have closed the mossy forest jungle trail for now. According to news, it would be ready by end month February. So March onwards, mossy forest hiking ho!

A LOOP is being added to the Mossy Forest boardwalk at Gunung Brinchang in Cameron Highlands to prevent visitors from getting lost.

Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (REACH) president R. Ramasamy said the loop leads back to the entrance of the 200m-long boardwalk.

"In the past, some visitors lost their way because they wandered off the boardwalk amidst the misty environment.

"Missing planks and vandalised ropes along the boardwalk's wooden platforms are also being replaced," Ramasamy told The Star.

Renovation works, which started since October last year, should be completed by the end of the month, he added.

KUANTAN: It was the cooperation between the public and police that saved Lee Wonk-seok, son of the South Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, after he went missing at Gunung Brinchang, Cameron Highlands.

Businessman Ramakrishnan Ramasamy, 45, said he, along with 12 other volunteers and the police managed to locate Lee, in his 20s, in a 12-hour search-and-rescue operation on Tuesday.

“The trek would be tough for outsiders but we are used to it since we are locals. Furthermore, we are always prepared to help search for lost tourists,” he said.

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Most visitors here are not aware of a mossy forest located in the Batu Gangan Forest Reserve.

This natural attraction, believed to be more than 200,000 years old, is nicknamed 'Lord of the Rings Forest' and 'Fantasy Forest' by local tourist guides.

Tourism Malaysia Pahang had recently organised a familiarisation trip for 60 people comprising travel and tour operators, hoteliers, media as well state tourism officers from Terengganu, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

IPOH: A 70-man search and rescue team has been assembled to look for a navy man missing in Gunung Brinchang in Cameron Highlands.

Leftenan Mohd Al-Amin Rohizas had gone climbing alone on Sunday morning. When he failed to return home on Monday, his mother lodged a missing persons report.

Cameron Highlands OCPD Deputy Superintendent Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said a rescue party, consisting of men from the army and police, was assembled on Tuesday afternoon. The search was hampered by heavy rain.

"Their search is centred around a 4km radius of the Brinchang Dam," DSP Wan Mohd Zahari said.

IPOH: The navy man who went missing after a hike up Gu­­nung Brinchang in Cameron Highlands last Sunday has been found.

Cameron Highlands OCPD Deputy Supt Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said Leftenan Mohd Al-Amin Rohizas, 27, was found at 8.30am yesterday at Masjid Kampung Terah in Gua Musang, Kelantan, some 120km away from where he went missing.

"He was found by villagers, who in turn informed us," he said here yesterday.

Mohd Al-Amin is being treated at the Cameron High­lands Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

It was reported that Lt Mohd Al-Amin had gone hiking alone on Aug 1. When he failed to return home the next day, his mother lodged a report. -- The Star News

IPOH: What was supposed to be a simple daytime trek turned into a 17-hour ordeal for six Penangites when they got lost in the jungles of Brinchang, Cameron Highlands.

The team, all Hash House Harriers members aged between 41 and 54, entered the jungle from Kampung Sungai Ruil at 3pm on Friday and ex-pected to leave before nightfall.

Instead, they had to be rescued by a team of nine police personnel, se-veral forest rangers, orang asli and other villagers at 8am the next day.

All were unhurt. However, two fe-male members, known only as Ah Hoon, 41, and Chan, 47, had to be air-lifted out of the jungle by the Sungai Besi police air wing unit.

Cameron Highlands OCPD Deputy Superintendent Yahaya Othman said police received a report from one of the trekkers at about 11pm on Friday.

“After searching for hours, we found them near the river about 4km from the village,” he said, adding that the group got lost after mistaking the sounds of a river for the highway.

“They should have informed us before going into the jungle. All trek-kers should, especially if they are not familiar with the route,” he said.

However, team leader Goh Jin Poey insisted that the team had not gotten lost and had only underesti-mated the difficulty of the trek.

Goh, who left the group with another friend to get help that night, said the trail was short but the steep hill made it a problematic trek.

“We just had to stop because some were too exhausted to go on,” said Goh who conquered the same trail five years ago. -- The Star.
