Pahang to attract more tourists with better packages

KUANTAN: Pahang, which registered 10 million tourist arrivals last year, has targeted to attract 13.6 million tourists this year by offering better and suitable tour packages featuring the state's popular destinations and activities.
State Tourism, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Shafiq Fauzan Sharif said there were efforts to upgrade current packages and design new ones to meet the needs of individuals and families.
"It will be a complete package including food, lodging, activities and places to go and it will be a concerted effort by the state government and industry players," he told reporters after chairing a dialogue with members of the Malaysian Association of Hotels Pahang chapter here yesterday.
The packages, he said, would include the state's 10 best tourism icons - Cameron Highlands, Genting Highlands, Fraser's Hill, Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre, Kuala Lipis (historical and heritage town), Taman Negara, Tioman Island, Rompin (billfish sports fishing), Pekan (royal town) and Cherating (surfing paradise).
He also said Fraser's Hill was given a facelift recently costing RM24mil while RM500,000 had been set aside to develop Sungei Lembing, once dubbed the El Dorado of the East where the largest, longest and deepest subterranean mine in the world was once located. -- The Star

Sri Lanka tea production drops
Sri Lanka’s tea production has been dropped dramatically during the first quarter of the year. The Ministry of Plantation said the production has dropped by 40.9 % compared to the first quarter of the last year. The three main reasons for this dramatic drop in tea production were the decreasing demand in the world market, dry weather conditions and the reduced fertilizer usage by 16% due to higher cost, the Ministry pointed out.
As a result of the prolonged drought that affected most of the tea growing areas in the country some of the tea plants have died reducing the tea crop. According to the statistics released by the government, the entire tea production in the first quarter of the 2008 was 8,350 kilograms. The production has dropped to 4,880 kilograms this year.
The Ministry sources pointed out that the tea production in hill country, low country and middle section has dropped by 31.3%, 38.2%, 46.5% respectively. -- Sunday Observer (Sri Lanka)

KUANTAN: Pahang received 39 applications for the Malaysia My Second Home programme last year and 32 this year although it has yet to officially launch it, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
“We have strict regulations pertaining to processing the applications and to date, none of them have been approved.
“The programme is not for just anybody. The state wants to attract genuinely rich people,” he said here.
Adnan also said that the applications were for properties in Kuantan, Bentong, Cameron Highlands, Kuala Lipis and Pekan.
Topping the list was Kuantan with 17 for 2007 and 15 this year, he added.
The applicants were from Singapore, the United States, South Korea, India, Britain, China, Pakistan, Fiji, Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand, Oman and Indonesia, he said.
“Successful applicants will be able to enjoy several privileges such as their children being allowed to attend school, college or university in the country and tax exemption for the purchase of vehicles assembled locally,” he added.
On another matter, the mentri besar said the number of tourists who visited Taman Negara last year was 80,890 and they spent more than RM53.8mil during their stay.
Adnan also said that the number of foreign tourists was 42,076 which was higher than domestic visitors, recorded at 38,814.
The state government and Tourism Malaysia would continue to hold various programmes to highlight the national park, including having familiarisation trips for the media, organising events such as the Taman Negara Eco-Challenge and promoting the place at exhibitions in the country and abroad, he added. -- The Star.

Visitors to Pahang
Looks like there a lots of visitors coming over to Pahang for a vacation. There was approximately 5 million tourist coming over to Pahang in year 2005 generating about RM$2 billion (US$555 million) for the state. It was quite an increase too, about 13.3% increase compared against the previous year of 2004.
The breakdown info of tourist was 3,725,237 locals and 1,305,425 foreigners. Pahang has the highest number of visitors when compared against the other states.
So let's see where the popular tourist destinations in Pahang are:
1) Genting Highlands = 3,202,823 visitors
2) Kuantan = 973,807
3) Cameron Highlands = 298,284
4) Tioman Island = 154,552
5) Fraser's Hill = 89,068
6) Termerloh = 84,612
7) Taman Negara = 74,811
Interesting, looks like a lot people like to go to Genting Highlands. Perhaps its close proximity to Kuala Lumpur (only takes 45 minutes drive by road) makes it a convenient place to go for quick relief from the hot humidity of the tropics. While Cameron Highlands is the 3rd popular destination in Pahang for visitors to Pahang.
For the nearest cooler climate Genting Highlands is pretty ideal, and one can just do a day trip without having to stay overnight making it very convenient. With its activity centered on theme parks (and the usual gamblers), and live shows sure attracts lots of people for its fun activities.
However, Cameron Highlands is more of a peaceful kind of visit and taking in the natural breathtaking beauty of lush greenery and slower pace kind of lifestyle reminiscent of old English country side, well I'll take Cameron Highlands anytime.
The Pahang state is targeting the tourists from Singapore, China, Hong Kong, West Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, Britain, Taiwan, Germany and India. But based on the visitors pattern to my website, the majority of the visitors to Cameron Highlands are from Malaysia and Singapore. Of course there are the usual amohs Mat Sallehs and Japanese visitors, the main bulk of visitors are from Malaysia and Singapore.
But sad to say, some accommodation providers, though not all, do not seem to give equal services to the locals and seem to have a preferential to treat foreign visitors better. They should take heed that most of their income is derived from locals more than that of foreigners. Foreigner may be willing to pay more, but the main volume of visitors is us locals. So hoteliers take heed!
Why I say this, because while trawling the forums for info, I noticed there were complaints about this lah, that lah, and the hotel can't seem to provide the services. But when a foreigner request for something, it was done immediately.
As for me, I was fortunate not to have encountered bad service and so far my experiences were pretty pleasant. There is of course a trick to remember, you may be a customer, and customers are considered as king, and you rightfully want all the attention and service a hotel may render to you. But do note that the hotel staffs are human too. So a pleasant approach to the staff about your grouses and needs will translate to a better service by the hotel staff. Hey, no one like to deal with a customer from hell! That way your vacation will leave with you fond memories rather than one that was marred with bad service from a hotel.
