VISITORS to Cameron Highlands in Pahang would probably end up plucking strawberries and tea leaves at the plantation and farms here.
But few are aware that there is a plantation along the foothill which offers visitors an opportunity to harvest fresh produce themselves.
Colourful: Some of the cactuses available for sale at the plantation.
The farm, which is aptly named - Step In CH - is managed by farmer Lim Yoke Fan.
Lim, a farmer with three decades of experience, said her customers were mostly regulars from the Kinta Valley in Perak.
"Many of them are from Ipoh and would drive up here on a weekend to purchase their week's supply of vegetables.
"There are also those who make a brief stop at my farm on their journey back from Cameron Highlands just to provide a chance for their children to pluck some vegetables.
"Many of these families grew up in the hustle and bustle of city life and as such, their children enjoy these experiences very much," she told StarMetro.
Lim said the vegetables available for plucking are snow pea, kai lan, korean spring onion, angle bean, asparagus, beetroot, cabbage, chinese cabbage, chillies, cherry tomato, lemon, pucuk labu and pumpkin.
Keeping busy: Lim (in white t-shirt) attending to some regular customers at her plantation.
Pricing of the produce depended on the yields and could be negotiated if purchased in large quantities.
"I can also arrange to get the popular Cameron Highlands maize from nearby farms hand-picked by myself.
"However, customers must buy in bulk and order in advance," she said.
Lim said she welcomes visitors at her farm who dont make any purchases.
"Feel free to take a stroll along the vegetation areas to smell, touch and enjoy the ambience as I practiced an open door policy.
Pluck me: A type of plant available for self-plucking at the plantation in Ulu Telom, Sungai Ikan, Cameron Highlands.
"I am looking at the long term and customers who are happy would make a return and recommend my farm to others through words of mouth," she said, adding that there were many plantations in the resort but many only sold ready-packed vegetables without providing a chance for visitors to pluck their own.
Lim's farm also sells a variety of herbs, flowers, cactuses and even strawberries.
Visitors can pay a visit at her plantation located at F-215, Ulu Telom, Sungai Ikan, Cameron Highlands or contact Lim at 013-491 1209. -- Metro
