Cameron Highlands Gua Musang Road Needs Lights

Gua Musang-Cameron Highlands road needs lights
Friday October 15, 2010

Gua Musang in Kelantan is only about a 90-minute drive from Cameron Highlands. The journey of about 100km is truly enjoyable if you are travelling during the day. The cool breeze and greenery plus those Orang Asli settlements on both sides of the road give you a pleasant feeling and an experience of what eco-tourism is all about.

Nowadays, more local and foreign tourists are using this road to travel between Gua Musang and Cameron Highlands as this is the shortest way and also easiest to get to the North-South Expressway at Simpang Pulai.

Unfortunately, travelling on the same road at night is a totally different story. Night driving along this stretch of road could be a nightmare. The road becomes so dark after 8pm that driving could be risky.

Few days ago my family and I were driving back to Gua Musang at about 7.30pm and suddenly right in front of us, an oncoming motorbike skidded and fell on the middle of the road. I got down and pulled the elderly man who was badly injured to the side. He said he hit a stone on the road and fell. It was pitch dark and a truck ran over the motorcycle and sped off in the darkness. A little while latter, two motorists stopped to help and took care of the injured man.

Although it was very dangerous to stop our car on the dark road, we couldn’t leave the injured man on the road unattended. I couldn’t take him into my car either as it was full.

You can imagine what could have happened to the injured motorcyclist if he was unnoticed in the middle of the road on that dark night. This was not the first time we encountered such incidents.

I strongly urge the authorities to take immediate action to solve this problem by installing lights along the road and also the road leading to Kuala Lipis which is equally dark for safety sake.

The authorities should create emergency lanes and also install SOS telephone booths for the benefit of the public.

With the upcoming Galas by-election, there is no better time for the authorities to address this problem to help the people of Gua Musang.

But of course, I also hope the Government will build good roads with safety in mind to avoid accidents or any unwanted incidents.

B. Kumarathevan,
Gua Musang.
