PENANG’S tourist arrivals saw a jump of 21.6% last year compared to 2007 and the numbers could have been higher if not for the global economic situation, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

“The state was the fourth most visited state in the country after Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Sabah.

“We will be working harder this year to ensure foreign tourist arrivals will increase,” he told a press conference at his Komtar office recently.

According to hotel occupancy figures, over 6.3 million tourists arrived in Penang last year compared to over 5.1 million in 2007.

Foreign tourists totalled over 2.8 million while there were nearly 3.5mil domestic tourists last year.

Lim said the rise in tourist arrivals was encouraging as Penang was catching up with Sabah, the third most visited state in Malaysia.

“In 2007, Sabah had 6.2 million tourists while we had only 5.2 million. Last year, we had 6.3 million.

“Kuala Lumpur, with over 16.3 million tourists as the nation’s capital, topped the list last year.

“Pahang, which was second with 10.1 million tourists, has highland attractions like Cameron Highlands,” he said.

Lim, who declined to speculate on this year’s figures as the global economic situation was still unclear, said Penang made an estimated RM1.4mil in profits annually from the tourism industry.

“I will announce new tourism programmes soon. They will provide jobs for the jobless,” he said.

When asked about roadside hawkers at Batu Ferringhi being given notices by the Penang Municipal Council and whether the action would affect tourism there, he said alternative sites had been offered to the hawkers.

“The move to relocate them was also due to tourists’ complaints,” he said. -- The Star
