Wet Month for a trip to Cameron Highlands

Reinforce Concrete set against the hillside
October month being the wettest month in Cameron Highlands, it means the incident of potential landslide occurrence will be more frequent. The roadworks (JKR) department will be very busy working hard to clear the road should there be any landslide occurrence.

If you are driving up, well, you could give a call to the hotel which you plan to stay and ask them how is the condition of the route to Cameron Highlands. As there are now two ways to go up, IMHO, the newer road from Simpang Pulai would be the better choice with the sheer hillside well reinforced with unsightly concrete reinforcement and the jungle cleared away from the main road. The chances of landslide might be less on this new route.

Oh, and don't forget to bring along your brolly as the Brits would say it and well, have a hot cup of tea in the shops and chill out (as though it is not cold enough already!) while waiting out for the rain to stop!

Hi,

Thanks for your advise. Intending to drive up to CH next week. Will be extra careful and take the Pulai Simpang Way since this is the wettest month.

By the way, after my stay there, I intend to drive to KL. Any recommended route to take?

Can e-mail map to me at dj140203@yahoo.com.sg

Much appreciated

Dear Sir,

Whichever route you take will depend on your driving skill. If narrow winding road is not a problem to you, you may try going downhill via the “old way” through Ringlet to Tapah toll. From there take the Plus Expressway heading toward south to go to KL. Using this older route, you will get to view the majestic Lata Iskandar waterfall and have a look at some of the shops selling pottery around there.

The distance traveling via this older route is shorter. But you may still get stuck behind some slower vehicles, and having to overtake some buses and lorries. But basically, these vehicles will not be going downhill as slowly as they were going uphill. And after entering the Plus highway, you may want to take a break at the Tapah R&R stop and buy some Guavas at the fruit stalls.

On the other hand, if you are not up to it for driving down the narrow winding road, then stick back to the easier new route to Simpang Pulai. Do remember to use a lower gear while going downhill for better control of the car.

For a quick look of the highway map, check out this website: http://www.jkr.gov.my/RoadMap/#

Have an enjoyable trip and safe driving!

Jan.
